Things to know about Euro 5 standard trucks

Cars that meet Euro 5 standards are much more technologically advanced than Euro 4. They usually appear in the control system, calculation, oil injection, fuel injection, ignition, especially in compression ignition engines (diesel) must be better. The core is to have Euro 5 standard fuel sold widely on the market.

Euro 5 standards in Vietnam: Starting from January 1, 2022, newly assembled, manufactured and imported automobiles will be required to apply Euro 5 emission standards. Vehicles currently in circulation and in use will not be required to undergo emission testing according to this standard.

What is the difference between old Euro 2, 3 engines and Euro 5 standard engines?

With old Euro 2, 3 engines, they are often used on 336, 371, 375, 420HP engines... and use conventional mechanical injectors. As for engines using Euro 4,5, they use capacities of 340HP, 380HP, 420HP... and are equipped with electronic fuel injectors and an exhaust treatment system mounted outside the engine to reduce pollution to the environment.

The entire system is integrated on the computer circuit board attached to the black box. The black box controls all operations and connects to the dashboard screen. Any related errors are reported by the black box and sent to the screen.

What is exhaust gas treatment solution?

The solution is called DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), the product contains URE, water and NH3. Because it contains high URE content, it is also often called Urea water.

This solution acts as a catalyst to convert harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions into nitrogen gas (N2) and water vapor through the SCR system. This process reduces NOx emissions from diesel engines by up to 80%.

What is the SCR exhaust gas treatment system?
AdBlue chemical reaction chain to convert Nitrogen gas (NOx) into nitrogen N2 and water vapor (H20)

The SCR system automatically adjusts the amount of AdBlue solution to be injected into the exhaust gas stream linearly according to the amount of NOx emitted from the engine, so AdBlue consumption also depends greatly on the vehicle's operating conditions.

Currently, popular car models using AdBlue exhaust solution mainly in Vietnam: passenger cars include Ford Everest

Heavy trucks from China: Chenglong, Howo, Faw, Shacman, JAC…, European imported vehicles: Man, Volvo, Scania…, passenger cars: Thaco, Tracomeco, Heaco…

When the vehicle runs out of AdBlue, the ECU will send out a warning signal via light or sound. If the vehicle continues to operate, the vehicle will still run but the engine power will be reduced to limit emissions. If not replenished in time, the ECU may record a series of errors, affecting operating performance.

Even on Ford Everest vehicles, you will not be able to restart the engine when the AdBlue solution is empty, you can only start the engine when at least 3.6L of solution is added to the tank. Drivers using this vehicle line should pay close attention to checking and adding AdBlue solution in time.

What is the DEF/AdBlue solution consumption?

According to the manufacturer, the consumption of AdBlue exhaust gas treatment solution is 4-5% compared to diesel fuel (ie running 100 liters of diesel consumes about 4-5 liters of urea). Note, the amount of urea consumption is calculated based on oil consumption, not based on the number of kilometers traveled.

For example: On a steep mountain pass, a truck carrying 20 tons of fuel consumes 35 liters/100km, then the amount of urea solution consumed is about 5%*35= 1.75 liters. On a flat road, with the same amount of goods on board, the truck consumes 28 liters of diesel/100km, then the amount of AdBlue solution consumed will be 28*5%= 1.4 liters.

With the price of Urea solution on the market fluctuating around 15,000-25,000 VND/liter, for 100 liters of diesel, customers spend an additional 75,000-125,000 VND to buy AdBlue solution.

AdBlue solution consumption will be proportional to diesel fuel consumption.

Based on such consumption standards, drivers can proactively replenish AdBlue before each trip. At the same time, vehicle owners can also calculate the cost of using the vehicle, to apply to the calculation of transportation costs as well as the business's revenue.
